The Penny Test vs. A Real Tread Depth Gauge

We've all heard it: "Just use a penny to check your tire tread!" While well-intentioned, this advice is dangerously outdated. Relying on the penny test can give you a false sense of security and put you at risk. Here’s why a dedicated tread depth gauge is the only way to go.

The Problem with the Penny Test
The classic advice is to insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head upside down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is too low. The issue? Lincoln's head is about 2/32 of an inch—the absolute legal minimum in most places. By the time the penny tells you to replace your tires, your safety has already been compromised for weeks or months. Performance in rain and snow degrades significantly long before you hit 2/32.

Why a Gauge is Superior

  1. Proactive, Not Reactive: A gauge gives you exact measurements (e.g., 4/32", 5/32"), allowing you to monitor wear over time and plan for replacement before you hit the legal and safety danger zone.

  2. Accuracy: The penny test is subjective. A gauge provides a precise, numerical value.

  3. Comprehensive Check: A proper gauge lets you measure wear in multiple grooves and across the tire to identify uneven wear patterns, a sign of alignment or inflation issues that the penny test would completely miss.

Don't gamble with your safety. Ditch the penny and upgrade to the accuracy and reliability of a real tread depth gauge.
